Sundance Sunset Cinemas Opens at Sunset and Crescent Heights
Moviegoers take note, the former Sunset 5 theater at Sunset and Crescent Heights boulevards is celebrating its reopening as the Sundance Sunset Cinemas. With its prime location on the second floor of the busy 8000 Sunset shopping plaza, the Sundance Group theater, formerly owned by Laemmle, will specialize in independent and foreign films.
Officially open on the Labor Day Weekend, the project was announced by Robert Redford, Sundance Group president, who said that he “discovered my love of movies at a little single screen theatre on the west side of Los Angeles as a boy. Having this ‘hometown’ theatre dedicated to exhibiting the work of independent filmmakers is a considerable goal achieved, and having the Sundance Institute as a neighbor and collaborator on special programs will be a tremendous asset to our patrons.”
Outfest was among local organizations invited to participate in the event nights leading up to the Aug. 31 opening of the new theater, which includes new digital equipment, a bistro, stadium seating and other improvements.
Paul Richardson, Sundance Cinemas President and CEO, said that “the new Sundance Sunset Cinema is going to be a gem located in the heart of West Hollywood. It’s long been a dream to build a theatre in my hometown, and I’m certain that this will be a place that patrons will enjoy as much as I will.”
