DGA, Other Guilds Join Asian Pacific Film Fest in WeHo, Koreatown, Little Tokyo

An L.A. actress realizes the power of social media in an extremely personal way, when her twin sister discovers her through a YouTube video. Both were adopted at birth and grew up on opposite sides of the world.

This true discovery is revealed through the documentary “Twinsters,” screening on Saturday at 5 p.m. during the LA Asian Pacific Film Festival, at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center, 244 S. San Pedro St., downtown LA. “Twinsters” explores the meaning of family and a connection that would have been impossible just 10 years ago without YouTube and Facebook.

The festival includes films and the two-day Conference for Creative Content (C3) in West Hollywood, Little Tokyo and Koreatown. In it’s fifth edition, “C3—Celebrating Normalcy” is presented by Sony Pictures Entertainment and brings together top industry and creative professionals, especially from Asian American content creators who are breaking new ground. 


The L.A. Asian Pacific Film Festival (LAAPFF), presented by Visual Communications (VC), combines with C3 to celebrate diversity, “or rather normalcy,” as organizers say, with the Directors Guild of America (DGA), Writers Guild of America (WGA), Motion Picture Editors Guild (MPEG), and the Screen Actors Guild – America Federation of Television and Radio Association (SAG-AFTRA).

“As showrunner and creator Shonda Rhimes said in March, telling stories involving women, people of color and LGBTQ characters should not be considered rare and ‘diverse.’ It is a reflection of our world, and in this case, ‘normalizing,’” states Milton Liu, VC’s director of Programs and Artist Services. “Partnering with the industry guilds, this year’s C3 will be dissecting ways in which normalizing continues to be a constant battle in Hollywood.”

Panelists will include actor Randall Park (FRESH OFF THE BOAT); director JON M. CHU (STEP UP 3D; GI JOE: RETALIATION); Oscar® winning director FRIEDA LEE MOCK (ANITA); editor MAYSIE HOY (THE JOY LUCK CLUB; MADEA’S CHRISTMAS); editor JULIA WONG (XMEN) THE LAST STAND; and others.
