Tom Hanks, Lisa Cholodenko Honored With 2015 Legacy Awards Nov. 5

Actor Tom Hanks, currently generating buzz for his role in “Bridge of Spies,” will be honored at the 2015 Legacy Awards Nov. 5, which marks the 10th anniversary of the Outfest UCLA Legacy Project, the largest archive of LGBT film in the world. Hanks will receive the “Trailblazer Award” for his Oscar-winning role in the film “Philadelphia.”

“Tom Hanks’ performance as a gay man with AIDS in ‘Philadelphia’ stands as a landmark example of a risk well taken,” said Outfest Board member Ari Karpel, the event co-chairman, in a statement. “His Oscar acceptance speech, in which he eloquently honored two gay men who were influential in his life, sent an essential message during a time of crisis.”

Writer-director Lisa Cholodenko (“Olive Kitteridge”), will be given the Visionary Award for her body of work, which includes “High Art,” “Laurel Canyon” and “The Kids Are All Right.”

“When Lisa Cholodenko burst onto the independent film scene with ‘High Art,’ we were thrilled by her commitment to depicting a lesbian relationship with such unwavering veracity,” said newly appointed Outfest Executive Director Christopher Racster in a statement. “However, it was ‘The Kids Are All Right’ that made the biggest impact, showing the world that LGBT parenting is just as joyful, complicated and challenging as straight parenting.”

Funds from the gala event will support the preservation work of the Legacy Project. The evening begins with cocktails at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 5, followed by dinner and the show, at the Vibiana Cathedral, 214 S. Main St., Los Angeles.

The Legacy Project is a partnership between Outfest and the UCLA Film and Television Archive, it is the only program in the world exclusively dedicated to saving and preserving LGBT moving images. There are currently more than 35,000 items held in the collection.
