Dre’s Flashback Friday Jams: Tina Turner
I Don’t Wanna’ Fight – Tina Turner
“It’s time for letting go….”
Not by any stretch am I suggesting this song was one of Turner’s best (there’s far too many to choose from) but what I will say is that this particular track is a keenly symbolic metaphor for many pivotal points in her storied and magnificent life and career. And while I’ve never looked into whether this was specifically written or dedicated to that infamous and particularly difficult time in her life, I do know that as great songs go, it has all the earmarks of what makes something timeless.
There’s a breezy, cleansing, cathartic wisdom about it that can apply to so many situations and thus, it not only fits her superbly but so many others who’ve also gone through anything remotely similar.
However she came about this song, it was the absolutely perfect coda to a life, a love and an indisputable legend. And as a true testament to her character and as with the very best of us, through sheer willpower and her peerless, indefatigable example, she actually left this plane of existence a little better than she found it.
Oprah Winfrey shared this about Tina: “She once shared with me that when her time came to leave this earth, she would not be afraid but excited and curious. Because she had learned how to LIVE.”
